Homework

School time means that we get to have a little break from our children while they get to learn new things and meet up with their friends. Sounds great right? What about when they come home? Do your children instantly start their homework and finish it quickly? Or are there tears involved? If the word ‘homework’ is your biggest nightmare then you aren’t alone. Many parents struggle with homework time and end up getting frustrated and upset in a similar way to their children. So how can we make homework time a bit easier?

Firstly, have a location in the home dedicated to homework. Having a homework area will reduce distractions while also having all their things around them. This way you won’t have your child getting up every 5 minutes for stationary or books.

It is a good idea to set a time for homework to be done. Getting your children in the routine of doing their homework at roughly the same time every day will help your children mentally prepare for homework. Let your child have a snack after school, change out of their uniform into comfy clothes, have a small break, and begin. Do not leave homework for the last minute. Doing it before bedtime will cause stress to both you and your child and also disrupt their bedtime routine.

Start with the harder subjects first. If your child struggles with math but is great at languages and writing, get the math homework done first! Mentally they will be less tired and the worst of it will be tackled first.

Have them make a list of what’s important to do for tomorrow or what could be left for another day. Once they complete a task, tick it off the list. That way they will feel they are accomplishing a goal and also you’ll be reassured that they have completed the work they need to have done.

Rewards go a long way! Reward good grades and explain that doing homework is revision time and it will help them achieve good grades.  For children who are highly unmotivated, reward them after they finish their homework. Have fun activities for after they finish such as watching TV, going to the park or helping you with cooking if they are interested.

We hope some of these tips have helped you!
