single parent/guardian

Being a parent/guardian isn’t an easy job. Nothing really prepares you for having kids. No matter how much you plan or try to mentally prepare yourself, you will never be ready for the journey of raising children. This is not to say that it isn’t incredible because it is but we cannot lie and say it’s all roses and fairies. Parenting is difficult especially if you are doing the job alone.

Single parents/guardians tend to feel guilty as they blame themselves for the lack of another parent figure. It is important not to do this. Feeling guilty for something that isn’t in your control is useless and will affect you in the long term. Blaming yourself and spoiling your kid in order to make up for it, is not going to help. Try to be positive even in difficult situations and be honest with your child, it’s okay to tell your child when you are feeling down just remind yourself and them that it will get better.

Setting routines and schedules to fit it all in will be beneficial. It is hard to keep up with picking up your child from school, taking them to activities and other errands. So plan as much as you can and set limits to how much can be accomplished in one day. You aren’t a superhero so don’t push yourself as it will only lead to exhaustion and burnout.

Lean on others for support. Many single parents/guardians will refuse help from others as they feel guilty and don’t want to burden others. It’s okay to accept help. People won’t offer you help if they don’t actually want to help you so take it. This doesn’t make you any less of a good parent or guardian.

Finding time for quality time can be difficult but it is so important to make it!
