Online Safety

We are all spending way more time than ever before online whether it be on our laptops, iPads, or phones. Children aren’t excluded from this, in fact, most children know more about technology than parents do. The internet is a great place to learn and definitely entertains us when we are bored but there are dangers that come along with it, especially for young children. How can you as a parent make sure your children are staying safe online?

1) Set a time limit.

It is easy to get carried away online. We are all guilty of it. One link leads to another page and after a couple of clicks you look at the time and realize you’ve spent 4 hours browsing the net with no idea how you took so long. Children are even more vulnerable to wasting time online so having a time limit, teaches children that there needs to be a limit between responsibilities and leisure time.

2) Location!

Where is the computer your child accesses? In their bedroom? We suggest having the family computer in a more open space where privacy is limited that way you can keep an eye on the sites your child is accessing.

3) Anti-virus/parental locks

Investing in a good antivirus program is recommended for all computer users but having children who might not be as aware of scams and viruses leaves your computer more susceptible to malware.

Additionally using parental locks for certain sites can also increase internet safety.

4) Be calm and approachable!

Being the type of parent that stays calm in stressful situations and tries to solve problems rather than freaking out, will open a communication gateway between you and your children.
