Secrets

How prepared were you to be a parent/guardian? No matter how many books you read, how many YouTube videos you watched, how many conversations you had with your friends who have a child, or how many questions you asked your pediatrician, I can assure you that you weren’t fully prepared. Having kids is not something that can be prepared for nor is it like any other experience before. I guess you could relate it to having a puppy but multiple it by 20. Not to say that it isn’t amazing and so rewarding because it is but we want to be honest so here are some secrets that all parents go through but don’t really talk about.

Let’s start with a fun one! You will be covered in bodily fluids and become so used to it that it doesn’t even bother you anymore. Please show me a parent/guardian who hasn’t been covered in throw-up at least once! This becomes part of the journey that we seem to forget to mention it to our friends who are expecting.

You will probably consider murdering your partner at least once. Just joking but seriously with all the stress and throwing up, any small thing your partner does could set you off. Prepare yourself for a couple of arguments that are so ridiculous, you can’t even believe you argued over such a small thing. You will get through it together!

Other relationships will change. Especially with your friends who don’t have children. Although they will definitely be there to hear your rants, you will need someone who can relate other than your partner. If your relationship with your friends depended on going to bars, you will definitely be too tired to even think of staying up past 10 pm. On the other hand, do make an effort to see them as you will also need some adult company once in a while.

Guilty as charged! Guilt as a parent is unreal. You won’t be prepared for it beforehand. Small things make you feel like the worst person in the world especially when you haven’t slept much. You’ll feel guilty over any decision you take and probably second-guess the decision more than once.

You’ll have days where you just want to be alone and you probably won’t get it. On top of that, you’ll also feel guilty about wanting this time alone but we are here to tell you that you shouldn’t be. Being around anyone can be draining and no matter how much you love your children, being around them 24/7 can be exhausting.

These things are all normal and are things that you cannot prepare for until you are in the moment so don’t beat yourself up over the guilt or your mood swings.
