Mistakes

If you keep up with our blog, you might remember that last week we were discussing some common mistakes that guardians and parents make. If you haven’t read it, it will be linked below and we suggest taking a look at it first. If you did read it, we are going to continue where we left off so let’s jump right in!

7) Not limiting screen time

We are in the new world of technology and it’s impossible to keep our children completely safe from it but that doesn’t mean we should just allow them to do whatever they want. Screen time needs to be limited and you should only communicate via text/messages when your child is not home. Don’t promote discussions via messages. Important talks need to be had face to face.

8) Constantly entertaining

Let them get bored once in a while. You don’t need to find ways to stimulate them constantly. Allow them to get bored and figure out how to entertain themselves. Let them embrace their creative side.

9) Protection from consequences

We know that it’s hard to watch your child suffer from their consequences but that is part of growing up and if you are always there to jump in when things get rough, your children will struggle with associating consequences with bad decisions.

10) Bubble wrapping children

Although bubble wrap is fun, it’s not reality. It’s okay for your child to fall or get sick once in a while. You can’t keep children locked indoors for fear they will get harmed.

11) Not asking enough questions

We don’t mean the usual, ’have you eaten?’ or ‘have you done your homework?’. We mean ‘How was your day at school?’ or ‘What did you learn?’. These questions create a stronger bond between you and make your child feel listened to.

The point of this 2-part list wasn’t to make you feel guilty if you do any of these but to make you realise that we all make mistakes and it’s never too late to adjust our way of parenting for the better!
