Going back to school can be a daunting time for children but also for parents. Getting back into the routine of early mornings and homework-filled afternoons can be a big change from the long summer days. We understand the struggle so we have compiled a couple of tips that may help you and your kids prepare for the beginning of a new scholastic year.
1) Set up a routine
Do not leave it to the night before as we guarantee you, it will be a nightmare! Start enforcing a bedtime routine a month or at least a couple of weeks before the starting date. This means waking your little ones up early. Make it fun by taking them for an early swim at the beach or a trip to the park. This will prepare them for early mornings.
2) Extracurricular activities
Some children aren’t very excited by the idea of school. The thought of going back to subjects they don’t really enjoy doesn’t entice them. That is why we suggest asking them if they want to learn something or attend an extra curriculum activity. That way they will have a class that they will definitely be excited about attending. It will make the school year look less boring!
3) School supplies
Make sure you stock up on new school supplies. This will ensure they will be prepared for their first day and let them choose it. Younger children will have fun choosing their pencil case and school bag. This will also help with the anxiety of starting a new scholastic year. Children will be excited to use their new supplies.
4) Plan rewards
Going from long summer fun-filled days to routines and early mornings isn’t fun for anyone. So, plan rewards! Take your child/children for ice cream after the first day of school and ask them how their first day went. Be interested in their day and make sure they feel comfortable expressing themselves about their feelings. Plan a weekend activity after the first school week such as a day at the beach or a Friday night cinema outing. Back to school doesn’t mean no more fun!
