Building a relationship

Life is very busy and it is easy to live life on what we call autopilot. We go to work, come home, do some housework, cook dinner and it’s already time for bed. This can lead to us being really out of touch with our family members. How can you work on building up a better relationship with your children?

Talking is key!

Talk to them as much as you can and not just about the usual stuff such as school or if they cleaned their bedroom. Try to have conversations about how they are feeling and what is going on in their life. This might sound basic but many parents end up focusing too much on conversations regarding school rather than how their child is coping and how they are feeling.

Remember things!

It feels really good when you tell someone something and next week they ask you about it, right? Children are the same. If you constantly ask the same questions because you keep forgetting the answer then they will think you aren’t interested. We know you probably have a lot going on but your child is your top priority so try to remember small details.

Let them teach you!

What are they interested in? Try spending some time learning their hobby. Maybe they really like making charm bracelets or maybe they like learning the piano, whatever it is try learning it with them for a bit. Doing an activity with your child will be fun and give you loads of time to talk.

Apologize when you make a mistake!

If you maybe get angry for no reason or shout a little bit more than needed, apologize. Showing your children that you make mistakes and can admit to them is important to build your relationship with them.

Tell them stories!

Sharing stories about when you were their age will be a great bonding experience. You don’t always need a storybook to tell a good story, sharing how your day went at work or relating a story to something that happened to your child that day is enough to get a whole conversation going. If you don’t open up, your children won’t either.

Teaching kindness is one of the most important lessons to teach a child:
