Dealing with outbursts and tantrums. All situations that are a part of raising children.

How do you handle these situations? Imagine this scenario! You and your child are out in a shop and they spot something they want. It’s usually a toy that looks exactly like the other four they have at home but for some reason they desperately want this one. You decline buying it for them and then comes the very embarrassing outburst.

What do you do? You probably want to just get swallowed up by the ground and disappear.  Which is fair enough but try using some of the following steps for the next time you are in such a situation.

Talk less! The key is to be direct and firm but avoid rambling as kids tend to stop listening after the first couple of words.

Do not let your emotions get the best of you. Children will react to your anger and focus more on your emotions rather than focusing on controlling their own.

Consistency is key! You need to prepare yourself for tantrums and outbursts. Decide how you are going to react before the situation gets out of hand.  When you have a plan in mind and you are prepared you are more likely to stay calm and in control.

The last thing we want to say is discipline with love and understanding. If this is happening at home and you can walk away, take a minute to calm down. If you are out in public, wait for your child to calm down before disciplining them and trying to explain why they can’t have the toy or that second ice cream they want. You need to adjust the way you handle situations according to the environment around you.
