Posture

Getting children to sit down sometimes can be a challenge, especially with all their energy. Once you do manage to get them to sit down, keeping them there can be another problem. Posture has a lot to do with this. If your child feels uncomfortable, it is very unlikely that they will sit down and focus on the task in front of them. So here are some tips to improve your child’s posture while sitting down.

Firstly, having a good chair that is suitable for their size is essential. Having one with good back support and even armrests will make it more comfortable. It is okay to use chairs without back support sometimes, in fact, it is even suggested to be used to increase core and back strength but these won’t be comfortable for long periods of time and are best used for short time frames. It is also important for your child’s feet to be touching the ground while their knees are bent at a 90-degree angle. This position will aid in concentration levels, especially for those little fidgeters. It is also important that your child is able to rest their elbows at a 90-degree angle for comfortability especially when doing tasks such as drawing and writing.

Keep in mind that sitting down activities shouldn’t be too long and this includes when they are watching TV. Try to keep a 30-minute time frame and then get your child moving even if it’s just for a bit. A break helps not only the mind take a small rest but also helps stretch the body.

When activities that involve sitting are planned, do try to have an activity beforehand that releases energy and gets them moving. This is especially recommended before homework as, after a long day of sitting at school, the last thing they will want to do is sit for more time.
